FIKAMUK – Finca Integral Kamuk

The Fikamuk project was born as a family initiative of Mr. William Solano and Ileana Flores, approximately 10 years ago. Passionate guides who, in addition to working to make their project grow, work for the well-being of the community.

From a very young age, Mr. Solano has worked for conservation of natural resources, and he built the Kamuk House for tourism purposes. He also drew up a blackberry plantation project, thus replacing the livestock system, so that it was more environmentally friendly.

From these initiatives that this family decided to carry out, the name Finca Integral Kamuk was born, to work with Rural Community Tourism, carry out blackberry picking tours and bird watching. In addition, a balcony in a natural area was built, to delight in the scenic beauty of the place.

Minimum stay: 

One week.

Requirements:

• Aged 18 or over.
• Good physical condition.
• Basic knowledge of Spanish.
• You must be friendly, communicative and able to work in extreme weather conditions for 4-6 hours per day.
• You must have a medical travel insurance policy for the duration of your stay.
• It is important that you like animals and children.
• You must have good behavior, an appropriate vocabulary and you can´t wear inappropriate clothing.
• The consumption of alcoholic beverages or any type of drug during the stay in the volunteer program is totally prohibited.
• Any kind of romantic relationship is strictly prohibited during the volunteer’s stay in the program

About the work:

Some of the activities that the volunteers will carry out include the design and maintenance of trails, preparation and placement of signs on trails, participation in daily agricultural activities with community members such as: picking blackberries, working in orchards, feeding animals, repair of community or family infrastructures, among others.

What about free time?

As a volunteer you will have one free day each week, during which you may choose to:

• Hikes, discover new trails
• Culture exchange
• Read a book
• Local tours

How much does it cost?

Please see below the rates per person expressed in US dollars:

$315 per week

*This amount covers accommodation, three meals per day and training. It does not cover the arrival and departure costs to/from the project, nor tours and other expenses.

* Ask for the daily rates and rates for stays longer than 30 days.

Location:

All volunteers will stay at the Kamuk House located in Tres Colinas de Potrero Grande in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas. 500 meters north of the old Potrero Grande school, in a private room with a shared bathroom. This community is located in the buffer zone of the La Amistad International Park with acces to the second highest hill in Costa Rica, the Kamuk hill. Important note:

There is no ATM in the area, so you should make sure that you bring enough cash for the duration of your stay. Only a few establishments accept credit or debit cards.

You will receive a confirmation email, along with a Volunteer Orientation manual with detailed information on transportation, what to bring and what to expect.
