What does it truly mean to coexist with wildlife?

In the remote community of San Josecito, in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, families live alongside some of the country’s most iconic species, including pumas and tapirs. This coexistence is extraordinary, but it also brings real challenges for local communities.

At Corcovado Foundation, we believe conservation can only succeed when communities have opportunities to thrive alongside nature.

That is why we are launching a new initiative that combines environmental education, community empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods to promote peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.

Together with BirdNwild, we created a short documentary that captures the story of San Josecito and the importance of protecting both biodiversity and the people who safeguard these ecosystems every day.

Through this project, we will:

• Work with local schools through environmental education programs involving students, teachers, and parents.
• Train community members to obtain certification as national tour guides.
• Provide seed capital for local socio-productive initiatives.
• Promote long-term coexistence strategies that benefit both wildlife and local families.

We are currently raising funds through GlobalGiving with a goal of US$82,000 to launch the first stage of this initiative.
